FUESE: in a nutshell
Welcome to the Interdisciplinary First-Semester Orientation – or FUESE for short!
For three days before lectures begin, you’ll get to know other first-year students from a wide range of degree programs and get a first glimpse of university and student life. Together with your tutors, you can look forward to games, activities, parties, and much more.
The FUESE complements the first-semester orientation organized by your department and gives you the opportunity to meet new people before your studies officially begin and start your university journey together.
What to expect?
Here you’ll find the FUESE schedule, showing you what’s happening and when. Below, you’ll also find more information about the individual events and activities – so you’ll be well prepared for everything that’s coming your way!
At our Welcome Event on October 7, 2026, at 12:30 pm in Lecture Halls H4/5 and H3, you’ll also receive all the important information you need. No registration required!
Lecture Hall H4/5 (with H3 directly opposite H4/5) is located at Uni Süd, between the cafeteria and the water dispenser, next to the two “White Cubes.”
Tutorials
Every winter semester, around 900–1,100 first-year students start their study programs at Ulm University. To make getting to know each other a little easier, all first-year students are divided into small groups. Each group consists of around 20–30 first-year students and is supervised by student tutors from higher semesters. However, the tutorials are not classes or lectures.
The tutorials mainly achieve their goals through games and interactive activities. The focus is not on simply providing information – after all, what you’re supposed to learn here is not something that can easily be presented on slides or explained in diagrams. So if you’re expecting a series of lectures, you’ll be disappointed!
Instead, you’ll shape the FUESE days together with the other participants. It’s a great way to experience university life from a different perspective and to quickly make friends and new connections at Ulm University – both with students in your year and with students from higher semesters. So get creative and discover Ulm University and student life!
Movie and Karaoke Night
After dinner, karaoke continues in the cafeteria following a short setup break. Take the stage and show off your singing skills, or dance and sing along with your fellow freshmen and tutors. There’s something for everyone in the song selection – from rock and pop to German Schlager.
Not a fan of karaoke? No problem! The Cinema Unit will take you on a journey into another world with a movie in the lecture hall cinema, also known as CineSpatz. (Movie and room TBA.)
City Rally
Our city rally will take you on a tour through Ulm’s city center! You’ll pass by well-known and popular spots as well as quieter, more hidden places. Even if you already know Ulm, this is a chance to discover the city from a new perspective. Riddles and challenges will guide you through the city, and our photo challenge will help you capture some of the memories along the way! Taking part is definitely worth it: you can win great prizes in different categories!
Meeting point: Entrance to the Stadthaus in the city center, Münsterplatz 50.
Lunch Break
Whether you grab something to eat in the city or get a meal at the university cafeteria when you return is entirely up to you. As a tip, you might want to check the mensa menu beforehand.
Please note that at the cafeteria, you can only get meals at the student price using your Ulm University chip card. You can top up your card at the top-up machines directly in front of the canteen entrance.
StuVe Units
The StuVe Units have put together an exciting program for you! The work of the StuVe is diverse and multifaceted. The different units and committees will introduce themselves to you through a variety of exciting activities and events. We’ll let you know here on the website where you can find each activity.
In parallel, you can also join your tutorials again. Your tutor will let you know where your tutorial group is meeting today.
Challenge
The FUESE Unit has come up with a particularly exciting challenge for you and your tutorial group. Whether you enjoy crafting, painting, writing, or have other hidden creative talents – the FUESE Challenge is your chance to put them to the test!
But there’s a catch: the clock is ticking! Once time is up, a jury will evaluate your creation. The winners will be announced and the prizes awarded immediately afterwards.
